Frédéric Jouanne (1895–1972) View Of Collioure, Circa The 1940s
A beautiful oil on panel depicting a view of Collioure, by the Bordeaux painter Frédéric-Charles-Marcel Jouanne (1895–1972).
This particularly luminous work exemplifies Jouanne’s highly personal painterly style, based on an intense and contrasting palette, simplified forms, and a free and expressive brushstroke. The deep blues of the Mediterranean and the sky interact with the ochres, reds, greens, and earth tones of the landscape, lending this depiction of Collioure remarkable decorative power.
The work is part of the movement of modern French painting of the interwar period and the 1940s, with a distinctly Fauvist and Expressionist sensibility: Here, Jouanne prioritizes color and the composition of the landscape over a strictly naturalistic representation.
An artist active in the Bordeaux art scene, Frédéric Jouanne was associated from the very beginning with the Indépendants Bordelais, a group founded in the late 1920s by artists eager to break free from academicism and explore contemporary artistic experimentation. As part of this artistic movement in Bordeaux, he rubbed shoulders with a generation particularly open to modern trends in painting. In 1951, he is listed as general curator of the Artistes Indépendants.
Several of Jouanne’s works are now cataloged in the art market, notably landscapes and still lifes. A Spring Landscape, dated 1944, notably confirms his work during this period, while a piece dated 1951 reveals the continuity of this colorful and modern artistic exploration.
With its Mediterranean subject matter, bold composition, and, above all, rich color palette, this painting is a beautiful example of modern Bordeaux painting from the 1940s.
The work is presented in its original oak frame, fully stripped, which particularly highlights the texture and colors of the painting.
