Large Louis XVI Mirror, Napoleon III Period
This is one of those mirrors that does more than simply reflect an interior: it gives it its character.
Here we present a remarkable large Louis XVI-style mirror from the Napoleon III era, crafted in the second half of the 19th century, with a particularly elegant presence thanks to its 162 cm in height and 105 cm in width.
Its frame, richly carved and stuccoed, showcases the full decorative vocabulary of Louis XVI Neoclassicism: elegant stepped architecture, accentuated by a delicate beaded frieze, moldings, and ova motifs, while the spandrels are enlivened by rosettes and floral cabochons.
But the true magnificence of this mirror lies in its exceptional pediment.
At the center, a large ribbon bow, with generously flared loops, holds a lush floral arrangement. On either side, delicate garlands of flowers and foliage bloom, artfully draped and cascading in festoons over the upper part of the frame. One can make out a profusion of roses, small flowers, leaves, and tiny twigs, in that particularly refined decorative style characteristic of the great Louis XVI pieces of the 19th century.
The side panels themselves are adorned with floral friezes, stylized foliage, and ribbon motifs. The lower corners are finished with beautiful compositions of acanthus leaves and scrolls, giving the frame an elegant sense of movement while retaining the architectural precision characteristic of the Louis XVI style.
And then there is the mirror…
A very beautiful original beveled mirror, perfectly proportioned to the frame, whose wide bevel captures the light and further accentuates the depth and preciousness of the whole. The mirror thus retains all the nobility and elegance of its original appearance. The decorative elements—bows, floral garlands, beaded friezes, and neoclassical motifs—perfectly match the grand Louis XVI mirrors of the Napoleon III period.
The mirror has been fully restored in our workshops.
The frame and decorations were carefully inspected and cleaned, and the few small areas where the gilding was missing were meticulously restored, respecting the original and its patina.
The result is superb: a mirror in excellent condition and presentation, retaining all the charm of its original gilding and its complete decorative scheme.
A particularly decorative, elegant, and luminous piece that will naturally find its place above a dresser, a console table, a fireplace, or in a contemporary interior, where it will immediately add a touch of grandeur and refinement.
