Mid-18th-century Oak Table — Overhanging Top France, 18th Century

A very attractive mid-18th-century oak table — overhanging top

France, 18th century
Solid oak — overhanging top — one drawer

A very elegant 18th-century oak table, notable for the beautiful simplicity of its design, the quality of its wood, and above all for the magnificent antique patina it has retained.

It features a generous rectangular overhanging tabletop, constructed from wide oak planks and accented by a thick edge. The tabletop rests on a simple band that opens at one end to reveal a drawer, giving this table all the functionality of antique household furniture.

The base is one of the piece’s main attractions. The table rests on four baluster legs, elegantly turned and accented with molding, joined by a substantial H-shaped brace, itself adorned with a fretwork crossbar.

Of particular note is the off-center crossbar, a particularly interesting design detail that contributes to the piece’s stability while giving this table its very distinctive character.

The woodwork is particularly appealing: the antique oak, marked by time and use, has a deep, warm grain, punctuated by small irregularities that attest to its authenticity. We deliberately chose to preserve this beautiful original patina, rather than trying to make it look like a new piece of furniture.

The table was restored in our workshops and received preventative and curative treatment against wood-boring insects. Its structure was thus restored while preserving the materials and the original patina as much as possible.

With its generous proportions and sturdy construction, this table can just as easily be used as a kitchen table, farmhouse table, work table, or dining table, and fits very naturally into both a historic home and a contemporary interior.

A particularly endearing piece that embodies all the charm of 18th-century French furniture: solid construction, authentic materials, a beautiful patina, and those small woodworking details that give each piece of antique furniture its own unique character.

A beautiful 18th-century country table, authentic and warm, restored with respect for its history and patina.
