Cookie Group - Pastoral Scene
Thuringia (Germany), circa 1890-1900
Charming cookie group depicting a gallant scene of pastoral inspiration, in the spirit of the XVIIIᵉ century compositions that were abundantly revived by German Thuringian manufacturers at the end of the XIXᵉ century.
The composition features a young couple elegantly dressed in the rococo taste.
The young woman, dressed in a long dress with delicately modeled folds, is seated in a graceful attitude, while her companion, dressed in a short habit and French-style breeches, stands beside her in an attentive, gallant posture.
The biscuit treatment is in the same style as the composition.
The cookie treatment reveals careful work on drapery and attitudes, with a search for elegance in gestures and compositional balance. Faces are finely modeled and express the softness characteristic of sentimental scenes inspired by XVIIIᵉ century iconography.
The set rests on a richly animated naturalistic base, evoking a small garden or undergrowth mound, decorated with rocailles, foliage and stylized plant elements, reinforcing the pastoral atmosphere of the scene.
Below the base appears a blue oval mark, characteristic of certain productions from the Thuringia region, an important center of decorative porcelain and cookie manufacture in the late XIXᵉ century. These workshops produced numerous decorative groups inspired by rococo aesthetics, destined for bourgeois interiors and amateur showcases.
This piece is fully in keeping with this decorative tradition:
it combines elegance of subject, finesse of modelling and narrative charm, making this group a decorative object highly representative of the historicist taste of the period.
