Marble sculpture - Venus Anadyomene - Birth of Venus - circa 1900

Elegant sculpture in white marble representing Venus Anadyomene, the goddess rising from the sea at the moment of her birth, depicted standing on a shell.

This subject, taken from ancient mythology, evokes the birth of Aphrodite née.

This subject, taken from ancient mythology, evokes the birth of Aphrodite born from the foam of the sea and carried by the waves on a shell. This iconography, already known in Antiquity and described by classical authors, was widely taken up in Western art, particularly during the Renaissance, before becoming a major theme of academic sculpture in the XIXᵉ century.

The figure adopts the famous attitude known as "Pudique Venus", inherited from ancient statuary, in which the goddess veils her nudity with a graceful gesture of the hand, while her long, waving hair accompanies the movement of the body. This iconographic type derives directly from the great models of Greco-Roman sculpture and their rediscovery in modern times, which deeply inspired European artists.

The composition features elegant swaying and a search for classical harmony:
the delicately modeled goddess rests on a large, stylized shell forming a pedestal, the whole being mounted on an architectural base. The marble work reflects an academic savoir-faire: softness of modelling, finesse of the face, careful treatment of the hair and volumes of the body.

This sculpture is in the tradition of the European neoclassical workshops of the late XIXᵉ century, a period during which mythological themes and idealized female figures were particularly prized. Numerous workshops, notably in Italy (Carrara, Florence) or France, then produced decorative marble sculptures inspired by ancient models and the Italian Renaissance.

These works, destined for elegant interiors and the collections of classical art lovers, perfectly illustrate the Belle Époque's historicist taste for revisited antique statuary.

Our example is distinguished by:

  • a substantial size (80 cm high)
  • a beautiful quality of sculpture
  • a luminous white marble
  • a particularly graceful and decorative composition

The set is in perfect condition, with no notable accidents.

A refined decorative work, embodying the classical feminine ideal and the artists' enduring fascination with ancient mythology.Sold with a non-original stall.
