Pair Of Wrought-iron Wall Sconces – 1950s
France, circa 1950–1960
Wrought iron with a patina
Pair of three-light wall sconces
Dimensions: approx. 45 × 20 cm
A lovely pair of wrought-iron wall sconces, crafted in the 1950s, whose particularly free-flowing and sculptural design evokes long intertwined vines.
Each sconce features three sinuous arms that unfurl with great fluidity around an elegant central interlacing motif. The stems, deliberately irregular, appear to have been designed like climbing plants, while their ends—small ribbed cups—hold twisted faux candles.
The piece as a whole has a surprisingly light silhouette despite the presence of iron: the metalwork here emphasizes line, movement, and balance rather than monumentality.
The motif of the two long twisted stems descending beneath the luminous cluster is certainly the most original detail of this pair. It gives the wall sconces a truly decorative, almost sculptural quality, and lends them that very distinctive charm of 1950s French designs inspired by flora, traditional ironwork, and postwar decorative tastes.
The twisted “candles” are decorative and fully contribute to the overall decorative effect.
A particularly attractive pair that would complement an historic home just as well as it would fit into a contemporary interior, where the contrast between the simplicity of the iron and the richness of the design truly comes into its own.
Dimensions: approximately 45 × 20 cm each.
A very pretty pair of wall sconces, decorative, elegant, and full of character, ideal for placement on either side of a mirror, a painting, or a fireplace.
