Silvered Bronze Jardinière By Victor Saglier

Artist: Victor Saglier
Important silvered bronze jardinière – Victor Saglier (Signed) – Late 19th / early 20th century. A remarkable oblong jardinière in finely chased and silvered bronze, attributed to the renowned Parisian bronze and silversmith Victor Saglier (1809–1894), a major figure in late 19th-century French decorative arts. The jardinière rests on four sculpted feet with stylized scrolls and foliage, giving it a stable and elegant base. The richly decorated body features exceptional relief work alternating leafy tendrils, volutes, floral motifs, and finely executed cartouches, typical of Saglier's decorative vocabulary, inspired by the Louis XV style revisited in the eclectic spirit of the late 19th century. The generously sized side handles take on a flowing, scrolled form, enhanced with mascarons and vegetal elements, emphasizing the sculptural and monumental character of the piece. The upper section is adorned with a central high-relief decoration composed of stylized foliage and fruit, lending great visual richness and perfect symmetry to the whole. The quality of the chasing, the depth of the reliefs, and the fineness of the details testify to first-rate workshop craftsmanship, characteristic of the productions of Victor Saglier, renowned for the excellence of his castings and finishes. The silver gilding, now slightly patinated, offers a beautiful period patina, highlighting the reliefs and accentuating the play of light on the surfaces. This jardinière, originally intended for the decoration of bourgeois drawing rooms or prestigious settings, could hold floral arrangements, plants, or decorative elements. Today, it is a major collector's item, ideal for display as a centerpiece, on a console table, or in a stylish interior.
