The painting depicts a moment of ecstasy experienced by Mary Magdalene.
After casting off her gold and pearl necklaces and shattering the mirror—symbols of vanity tied to earthly life—she collapses, half-fainting, in a moment of profound repentance, supported by her sister Martha.
Standing beside her is the Virgin Mary, who appears to be pointing the way to the Lord with a gesture of her hand.
Behind her stands another young woman, while a young Moorish servant in livery gathers up the objects thrown to the ground.
The figure of Mary Magdalene is illuminated at the center of the scene and displays her alluring body with bare breasts in a highly erotic pose.
The artist’s intention is clear: to present an image that, while considered religious, satisfies the patron’s needs by being a work that can easily be placed in his private room.
The magnificent gilded frame, imposing and opulent, seems to deliberately contrast with the modest message conveyed by the work’s subject matter.
