Large Japanese Satsuma Vase Decorated With Relief Figures And Gilding – Meiji Period, Late 19th Century
An important Japanese Satsuma earthenware vase, baluster-shaped with a generously rounded body and a short, flared neck, featuring rich polychrome decoration enhanced by abundant gilding.
This vase is distinguished by its remarkable relief decoration depicting several Japanese figures, likely sages or dignitaries, dressed in sumptuous traditional costumes.
The figures, finely modeled and painted, are set against a lively landscape of vegetation, architecture, and ornamental motifs.
The piece as a whole displays great decorative richness, combining polychrome glazes in shades of red, green, blue, and orange on a background entirely worked in gold.
The upper portion is adorned with geometric patterns, medallions, and Japanese symbols, while the base features a particularly intricate decorative frieze.
The earthenware displays a beautiful craquelure in the glaze, characteristic of Satsuma ware.
A Japanese mark painted in red on the underside of the base, featuring, in particular, a circular emblem with a cross, traditionally associated with Satsuma ware.
A very beautiful decorative object, particularly noteworthy for the richness of its gilding, its relief decoration, and its generous dimensions.
