Chinese "five Blessings" Sign — Polychrome Wood, Late 19th Century
Chinese "Five Blessings" sign, late 19th century. The five bats symbolize the "five blessings": longevity, wealth, health and peace, love of virtue, and a peaceful death at the end of life. In Chinese, fú (“bat”) is a homophone for fú (“happiness, blessing, good fortune”). A coin motif in the lower section symbolizes the balance between universal forces and humankind: the round shape represents Heaven, and the square central hole represents Earth. The combination of the circle and the square symbolizes harmony between Heaven and Earth. The exact meaning of the inscriptions is unclear; they appear to be respectful congratulations and an offering from a brotherhood, with the inscription “Jiyi Tang” (集義堂). Wear on the polychrome paint, small cracks, and a chip at one end of the foliage.
