Venice Carnival—18th Century
Martin Engelbrecht's optical theater (1684–1756) depicting the Venice Carnival in the 18th century is one of the most famous masterpieces by this Augsburg engraver and publisher. These works of art and ingenuity, often called “perspective views,” peep-shows or paper dioramas, made it possible to recreate the illusion of three-dimensional depth long before the advent of cinema.
The festive scene: The backdrop features a crowd of masked and costumed figures dancing, playing music, or strolling (costumes from the Commedia dell’arte, dominoes, and bauta masks).
The Venetian setting: The various perspectives reveal the iconic monuments of St. Mark’s Square.
