Dragon Regiment Saber, Model 1854, Modified In 1882.

During the Second Empire, the Line Cavalry requested the issuance of a straight saber to replace the “wobbly 1822 model,” which was deemed unsuitable.
The first series was issued to the Carabiniers, with a 100-mm blade, and then to the Dragoons, with the blade and scabbard shortened by 25 mm.
On July 13, 1882, it was decided that the dragoon sabers would be shortened by another 5 cm and that the lower scabbard strap would be removed. The official designation became“modified Model 1854 dragoon saber.”
Four-pronged brass guard, identical to the Model 1822. Main prong marked “39608,” bearing a “1” and the inspector’s mark. Guard cap with a flange and short tail. Wooden grip wrapped in blackened calf skin and filigree-decorated with a twisted brass wire.
Straight blade with a double hollow edge, with the point aligned with the axis, of the regimental length of 92.5 mm, 35 mm wide at the heel. Flat back engraved “Mre d’Armes de Châtlt – February 1879 = Dragons Mle 1854 – Tmé 1882.” It bears the inspector’s mark on the heel, on the side opposite the guard. Original brown leather scabbard tie.
Thick sheet-metal scabbard with a single loop ring. Spring-loaded scabbard bowl, riveted. At the top of the scabbard, on the crossguard side, are the R and B hallmarks within a circle, indicating the inspectors. Lyre-shaped pommel.
The blade of this saber is in mint condition. The scabbard is in good condition but has a few pinholes.
