Wilder M. Darling is recognized as the dean of Toledo's painters. He had a had a notable career in Europe before returning to Ohio, where he as a painter and teacher. Born in Sandusky, Ohio, shortlybefore the Civil War, he began studying art at the age of fourteenunder the tutelage of Henry Mosler in Cincinnati in 1870.
At the age of nineteen, he left for Europe with Mosler to further hishis studies. He studied in Munich with Frank Duveneck and at the Royal Academy,before continuing his training at the Académie Julian in Paris underJean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. He alsofrom William Merritt Chase in the U.S.A.
At the outbreak of the First World War, Darling returned to the United Statesand spent two years in New York. He then moved to Toledo, near his hometown of Sandus. his hometown of Sandusky.
