Louis XVI Style Vitrine Attributed To F. Linke Marquetry Gilt-bronze 19th Century
Provenance
An important late 19th-century display cabinet, attributed to François Linke, a Parisian cabinetmaker whose creations are distinguished by their exceptionally meticulous craftsmanship and the use of rich bronze fittings. The attribution is based in particular on the piece’s overall design, the remarkable quality of the bronze work, and the central motif located below the belt, which belongs to the characteristic decorative vocabulary found in the works of François Linke and Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener.
Description
The piece features a structured and balanced composition, organized around a large central glass-fronted compartment designed for display. The central door, largely glazed, reveals an interior fitted with glass shelves, allowing for the display of porcelain, collectibles, bronzes, or silverware while maintaining a sense of visual lightness.
On either side are two compartments closed by solid doors. These are adorned with panels of geometric marquetry arranged in diamond shapes, framed by gilded moldings and embellished with bronze floral motifs. The same marquetry continues along the sides, creating a uniform decorative pattern across the entire piece.
The upper band features abundant ornamentation consisting of garlands of flowers suspended from ribbons, vases, trophies, rosettes, and plant motifs. The bronze elements are distinguished by the exceptional clarity of their casting, their pronounced relief, and the precision of their details, lending the decoration a genuine sense of depth. The central motif beneath the piece reflects this same level of craftsmanship.
The piece is topped by an original tabletop made of polychrome marble with pronounced veining, a rare variety, whose pink, red, cream, and yellow tones complement the warm hues of the wood.
Technique and Materials
Mahogany-veneered wood frame, geometric marquetry panels, rich gilded bronze mounts, central glass-paned door, interior glass shelves, and a marble top. Locks and hardware integrated into the doors.
