Empire Mahogany Chaise Lounge Bronze Gilt 19th Century
Provenance
Elegant Empire-style meridienne, made in the spirit of French furniture from the first third of the 19th century. With its architectural silhouette, croziered uprights, claw feet and gilded bronze decoration with winged figures, it is part of the neoclassical decorative vocabulary developed under the Consulate and Empire, then taken up again in the 19th century in representative interiors.
Description
The méridienne features an elongated structure with two asymmetrical chevets, one higher up receiving a cylindrical cushion, the other treated as a low scroll. The polished wood side jambs take the form of a crozier, highlighted by stylized gilded sconces. The seat and upholstered panels are covered in a red fabric with wide tone-on-tone stripes, whose variation in sheen lends relief to the whole without breaking the sobriety of the composition.
The decoration is concentrated on the ends and the base: winged masks, claw feet, circular rosettes and leafy motifs applied to the crosspieces. The longitudinal crosspiece is adorned with a fine central ormolu garland, while the upper ends receive antique-inspired openwork ornamentation.
Technique and materials
Structure in mahogany-stained wood or mahogany veneer, polished to a beautiful depth of shade. Refurbished or very clean textile upholstery in silk or red striped damask fabric. Ornamentation in gilt bronze or finely chased gilt metal, with details of feathers, claws, rosettes and plant motifs. The decorative quality is based on the contrast between the warm brown wood, the gilding and the deep red of the trim.
Dating
Nineteenth-century work in the Empire style. The crosiered uprights, claw feet, winged figures and neoclassical symmetry of the ornamentation refer directly to the French repertoire of the 1800-1830s, with an execution that may correspond to a historicist production of the 19th century.

Condition
Good overall condition. The structure appears stable, with a beautiful shine to the wood and clearly legible decorative bronzes. The trim is clean and decorative. Small normal traces of use, possible light marks or wear on the wood and gilding, compatible with the age and use of the furniture.
Use and destination
Decorative piece designed for a living room, bedroom, library or classic-style interior. Its low, elongated line allows it to be displayed in the center of a room, against a paneled wall or beneath a large pictorial composition. It will also suit an Empire, neoclassical or eclectic decor.
