Oil On Canvas After Peter Paul Rubens, Allegorical Scene, 19th Century, Dated 1861

Artist: J.g, 1861
General description

Oil on canvas depicting a large-scale allegorical and mythological scene, executed after the manner of Peter Paul Rubens, emblematic of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Signed with a probable monogram “J. G.” and dated 1861, the painting belongs to the academic revival of Old Masters’ compositions that characterized European art in the nineteenth century.

Subject and iconography

The composition presents a gathering of female and male figures accompanied by winged putti, arranged within a grand architectural hookup inspired by classical antiquity. The scene suggests a moral or mythological allegory—possibly connected to Love, Fertility, or a nuptial celebration—subjects frequently explored in Rubens’ oeuvre and its numerous later interpretations.
The fleshy figures, dynamic poses, swirling movement, and abundance of drapery directly recall Rubens’ compositional language, widely disseminated through engravings and studied by nineteenth-century academic painters.

Stylistic analysis

The modeling of the flesh, the warm palette dominated by ochres, deep reds, and golden tones, and the animated gestures attest to a solid academic training. The painter privileges overall visual impact and narrative clarity over minute detail, consistent with nineteenth-century reinterpretations of Baroque aesthetics.

Technique and support

Oil on canvas, stretched on a wooden stretcher. The paint surface displays a coherent age-related craquelure, with no major losses affecting legibility. The reverse shows an old stretcher construction consistent with mid-19th-century practice.

Signature and date

The painting bears a monogram “J. G.” (probable reading) and is dated 1861, visible in the lower area of the composition, confirming its historicist nature and period execution.

The frame

The work is housed in an imposing carved and giltwood frame, French, probably from the second half of the nineteenth century.
The richly sculpted decoration combines scrolling foliage, shells, cartouches, and heraldic-inspired motifs at the corners, evoking French arms. Such frames were intended for prestigious interiors and significantly enhance the decorative presence of the painting.

Condition

Overall good condition, with an attractive aged patina. Minor wear and localized losses to the gilding of the frame, consistent with age and without structural consequence. The canvas remains stable.

Dating and attribution

France or Western Europe, second half of the 19th century (1861).
After Peter Paul Rubens, by a nineteenth-century academic painter.
