François Linke — Louis XV-style Chest Of Drawers In Veneered Wood, Gilded Bronze, And Marble
Provenance
Chest of drawers made by François Linke, bearing the engraved signature “F. Linke” on the bronze trim bordering the top. This piece combines a relatively compact size with an elaborate design, in which the veneer work and metal ornamentation play a key role in the piece’s overall balance.
Description
The chest of drawers features a dynamic front, curved sides, and four arched legs extending from the side panels. It has twelve drawers: one large top drawer, three central drawers, and two side rows of four small drawers. The top drawer has a compartmentalized interior.
The warm-toned veneers are arranged in geometric patterns, with herringbone motifs and symmetrical designs highlighted by frames. Abundant gilded bronze trim adorns the contours of the front and sides. It features leaf-motif handles, ornate lock plates, shells, volutes, and scrollwork.
In the center, a garland of flowers surmounts a prominent rocaille motif, set within a sinuous frame that visually unifies the three drawers. The ornamentation on the side panels extends down to the feet, while the lower crossbar features a scalloped profile.
The marble top features burgundy and purplish hues, crisscrossed by white and gray veins. Its outline follows that of the piece. Despite its modest dimensions, this chest of drawers is notable for its considerable weight.
Technique and Materials
Wood construction with geometric veneer decoration, gilded bronze trim, and a polished marble top. The dovetail joints are visible on the sides of the open drawers. The chiseling of the bronze highlights the veins of the leaves, the petals, and the relief of the shells. Smooth surfaces alternate with finely carved details, creating a nuanced interpretation of the decoration.
Date
Late 19th century, circa 1890. The curved lines, arched legs, and Rocaille motifs reflect an interpretation of the Louis XV style.
Condition
In very fine condition, in its original state, with no missing parts or visible repairs. The surfaces show a patina and slight signs of wear, particularly noticeable on the bronze elements and inside the drawers.
Use and Purpose
Its numerous drawers allow for organized storage of small items or personal belongings. Its width of less than one meter makes it easy to incorporate into a living room, bedroom, or study, while still allowing the decorative details on the sides to be appreciated.
