Object description :

"19th Century Dueling Pistol Box"
Origin and Period

Pair of percussion dueling pistols dating from the first half of the 19th century (circa 1830–1850), most likely of Belgian origin. The technical features and style are consistent with the production of fine Liège-made firearms from this era.

Craftsmanship and Materials

Each pistol features an octagonal Damascus steel barrel with swirling forged patterns. The metal components – lockplates, hammers, trigger guards – are adorned with hand-engraved scrollwork. The stocks are made of finely polished walnut, shaped and checkered for grip and elegance. The butt cap is shell-shaped, finely engraved, and opens as a small compartment. The barrels are rifled for increased accuracy, and the percussion mechanism provides reliable ignition.

Function and Purpose

These pistols were specifically designed for formal duels – a codified practice of the 19th-century European upper classes. Identically constructed pairs ensured fairness between duelists. The finely adjusted hair-trigger mechanism and rifled barrels made them highly accurate and suitable for high-stakes, single-shot encounters.

Case and Accessories

The pistols are housed in their original polished mahogany case with fitted compartments and velvet lining. The set includes:

  • brass powder flask in the shape of a shell,

  • bullet mold,

  • wooden ramrod/cleaning rod,

  • screwdriver and nipple wrench combination tool,

  • small mallet,

  • cap container,

  • lead bullets in a lidded compartment.

All components are original and complete, forming a fully functional and collectible dueling set.

Aesthetic and Functional Details

Each pistol displays harmonious proportions, engraved steel parts, a clean trigger guard, discreet front sight, and ergonomic grip. The case is equipped with a functioning lock, solid brass hinges, and velvet lining to protect its contents. The visual and technical refinement of the ensemble reflects the high standards of 19th-century gunsmithing and craftsmanship.
