"cupid And Psyche" Clockset Patinated Bronze And Siena Marble, Charles X Period, Circa 1830

Period and attribution

A French mantel garniture comprising a clock and a pair of candelabra, executed in the first half of the 19th century, during the Charles X period, circa 1830–1840. The ensemble reflects the late Neoclassical taste, still strongly influenced by antique mythology and classical models.

Iconography

The clock features the subject of Cupid and Psyche, drawn from classical mythology and widely appreciated in decorative arts from the late 18th century onwards. The composition depicts the lovers in an intimate and harmonious interaction: Cupid, identifiable by his wings, gently inclines toward Psyche, while she adopts a graceful, slightly contrapposto stance, raising her arm in a fluid gesture that structures the composition.

This theme, symbolizing the union of love and the soul, is particularly sought after in high-quality mantel garnitures.

Materials and techniques

The ensemble is crafted in patinated bronze, with a deep dark patina enhancing the sculptural quality and fine detailing (hair, drapery, anatomy). The chasing is refined and precise, especially in the treatment of the figures.

The bases are made of yellow Sienna marble, finely polished, with natural veining adding depth and visual richness. Gilt bronze elements, including the bezel of the dial, provide a subtle contrast with the darker patina.

The circular dial is set within an architectural plinth, reinforcing the vertical and balanced composition.

Ornamentation and composition

The clock rests on a moulded rectangular base with restrained symmetrical bronze mounts. The matching candelabra feature multiple scrolling arms, supported by a central fluted marble column, standing on tripod bases with stylized animal paw feet in bronze.

The ensemble displays strong stylistic coherence and reflects the refined decorative vocabulary of Restoration-period garnitures.

Condition

Very good original condition. Well-preserved patina. The marble shows minor wear consistent with age. The ensemble retains strong decorative presence and clarity of detail.

Appraisal

A large-scale mantel garniture distinguished by the quality of its casting, the finesse of its chasing, and the desirability of its mythological subject. The Cupid and Psyche theme, combined with noble materials and balanced design, makes this set a highly decorative and sought-after piece.
