Vitrine Signed François Linke 19th Century
Provenance
Elegant French vitrine signed François Linke on the lock, by the celebrated Parisian cabinetmaker associated with the Belle Époque and with high-quality luxury furniture inspired by the Louis XV and Transitional styles. This cabinet belongs to the tradition of refined Parisian display furniture, combining decorative richness, carefully executed cabinetmaking and finely chased gilt-bronze mounts.
Description
The vitrine has a slender architectural form with a glazed front door and glazed side panels, allowing the interior to be viewed from several angles. It stands on four cabriole legs fitted with gilt-bronze sabots and foliate mounts. The front is framed by fine gilt mouldings with beaded decoration, while the upper frieze is decorated with floral swags, foliate drops and a central gilt-bronze relief panel depicting putti.
The cabinet is topped with a polychrome marble slab in beige, brown and reddish tones, adding visual weight and refinement to the upper part of the piece. The lower apron is centred by an elaborate gilt-bronze trophy composed of musical instruments, floral branches, foliage and decorative attributes. The side uprights are enriched with vertical floral mounts, while the lock area is fitted with an ornate gilt-bronze escutcheon and key. The interior is fitted with several adjustable glass shelves supported by side rails, above a red fabric-lined lower base.
Technique and materials
The cabinet is made in veneered wood, probably rosewood, with carefully arranged chevron and geometric veneer work on the uprights and rails. The decorative mounts are in finely chased gilt bronze, including the upper frieze, swags, side drops, sabots, lock plate, central apron trophy and moulded frames. The top is marble. The door, side panels and shelves are glass.
Dating
France, late 19th century, Belle Époque period, in the Louis XV-Transition taste. The dating is supported by the combination of cabriole legs, rich gilt-bronze rocaille and floral mounts, geometric veneer work, marble top and the refined Parisian cabinetmaking vocabulary characteristic of luxury furniture from the end of the 19th century.
Condition
Good overall state of presentation. The cabinet retains its decorative structure, gilt-bronze mounts, marble top, glazed panels and interior glass shelves. Normal signs of age and use are visible. The gilding shows an even decorative appearance with natural variations of patina. The wood surface appears to have been cleaned or repolished at an earlier stage, consistent with a gallery presentation.
Function and display
This vitrine was designed for the display of porcelain, bronzes, glassware, collectibles or small objets d’art. Its glazed construction, adjustable shelves and decorative gilt-bronze ornamentation make it suitable both for an antique gallery setting and for a refined private interior in the Louis XV, Belle Époque or classical French taste.
