Pair Of Silver Figures - Philippe I De Castille Et Bianca Maria Sforza

Artist: Israel Freeman & Son Ltd

Provenance
A pair of sterling silver (.925) figures retailed by Israel Freeman & Son, a known distributor of high-quality decorative objects in the Anglo-American market during the 20th century. The retailer’s name is preserved inside the original fitted case.

Description
This refined pair depicts two historical figures in ceremonial attire, identified as Philip I of Castile and Bianca Maria Sforza. The female figure stands upright holding a sceptre, dressed in an elaborately engraved gown with vertical ornamental bands reflecting Renaissance court fashion. The male figure is shown in a more dynamic stance, equipped with a sword and a finely detailed heraldic shield. The faces, carved in a contrasting light-toned material, create a subtle polychrome effect. Each figure stands on an openwork hexagonal base adorned with colored cabochons imitating precious stones, integrated into scrolling decorative motifs.

Technique and materials
Crafted in solid sterling silver (925/1000), partially gilt, cast and finely chased to enhance the intricate details of the garments and heraldic elements. The faces are executed in a material imitating ivory, providing contrast with the metal surfaces. The bases feature openwork decoration with applied stones. The execution reflects careful craftsmanship with emphasis on texture and surface variation.

Dating
Second half of the 20th century. The hallmarks, overall finish, and historicist Renaissance-inspired style indicate a modern production rooted in traditional European decorative arts.

Condition
Very good overall condition. The silver shows a light, even patina. Decorative elements, including the applied stones, remain intact. The original fitted case, covered in green fabric with metal clasps, shows minor wear consistent with age.

Function and display
Decorative objects intended for display in a refined interior, cabinet, or showcase. The presence of the original case enhances their collectible character and presentation value.
