Silver Centerpiece, Louis XVI Style, Late 19th Century, 2.5kg
Provenance
This pedestal centerpiece belongs to a high-quality European silver production typical of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The “800” hallmark confirms a standard silver grade widely used in Central and Southern Europe during this period. The piece reflects a historicist approach, faithfully reinterpreting the decorative vocabulary of the Louis XVI style.
Description
The piece features a wide circular bowl with a shaped rim, articulated by engraved cartouches and reserves decorated with symmetrical scrolling foliage. The interior surface shows subtle engraved ornamentation, softened over time, resulting in a consistent and attractive patina. The exterior is structured by gentle fluting, accented with applied foliage and ornamental clasps.
The stem is the most distinctive element: composed of two intertwined fish rendered with notable naturalism, their scales finely chased and their bodies twisting in a dynamic spiral. This motif, rooted in classical and neoclassical decorative traditions, evokes marine symbolism and abundance.
The spreading base is richly adorned with stylized rocaille elements, shells, and garlands, providing both visual and structural balance. The contrast between the restrained classicism of the bowl and the expressive sculptural stem creates a refined and decorative composition.
Technique and materials
Solid silver (.800 standard), executed using traditional repoussé and chasing techniques. Decorative elements are carefully refined with chiseling tools, with particular attention to textural detail such as scales, foliage, and shell motifs. The craftsmanship reflects a high level of artisanal execution.
Dating
Late 19th – early 20th century. This dating is supported by the silver hallmark, the manufacturing quality, and the historicist aesthetic characteristic of the period, drawing inspiration from 18th-century Louis XVI design.
Condition
Good overall condition. Visible wear and patina consistent with age, particularly inside the bowl. No significant structural damage. Decorative details remain well preserved and legible.
Function and display
Designed as a centerpiece or display bowl. Suitable for fruit, floral arrangements, or as a decorative sculptural object. Its height and elaborate stem make it a visually prominent element in both classical and eclectic interiors.
