Painted Porcelain Plaque, “the Blind Nydia”, Signed Wells
Provenance / Attribution
Rectangular painted porcelain plaque depicting the subject known as The Blind Nydia, after Baron Cuno von Bodenhausen (1852–1931). The composition is signed “Wells” at the lower left. The work belongs to the established tradition of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century painted porcelain plaques, in which academic, literary and classical subjects were transferred onto porcelain with refined pictorial detail. The plaque is probably by KPM Berlin, subject to definitive confirmation through direct examination of the reverse and impressed marks.
Description
The scene represents Nydia as a classical female figure, standing and moving through an architectural interior inspired by Roman antiquity. She is shown with closed eyes, dressed in a pale draped garment and holding a shallow tray with flowers. The face is rendered with a calm, idealised expression, while the soft treatment of the flesh tones gives the figure a delicate and contemplative presence. The drapery, painted in shades of cream, white and pale rose, is carefully modelled with subtle tonal transitions. The darker background creates depth and contrast, allowing the figure to stand out clearly. Architectural details, including a floral column, an antique bust and a mosaic floor, reinforce the neoclassical character of the composition.
Technique and materials
Polychrome painted porcelain with a glossy glazed surface. The execution shows careful attention to the modelling of the face, hands, drapery and floral details. The plaque has the refined finish associated with European painted porcelain panels intended for framing or cabinet display. The reverse is undecorated, white in tone, with visible age-related marks and traces of handling.
Dating
Late nineteenth or early twentieth century, based on the subject, academic style, chromatic treatment and the technique of painted porcelain plaques typical of European production of this period.
Condition
Good overall condition consistent with age. The painted surface shows superficial traces, fine scratches, light surface wear and minor marks related to handling and age. The reverse displays old soiling, small marks and firing or contact traces. No major damage or obvious restoration is visible from the supplied photographs.
Function and display
A decorative and collectible porcelain plaque intended for framing or display in a cabinet. It would suit a classical interior, a collection of European painted porcelain, or a refined decorative arrangement centred on neoclassical and academic subjects.
