Pair Of Malachite Lamps
Provenance
A fine pair of oil lamps characteristic of the decorative taste of the late 19th century, executed in a neoclassical and Second Empire spirit. The architectural composition, gilt bronze mounts, ram-head ornaments, claw feet and vegetal decoration belong to an ornamental vocabulary inspired by Antiquity, widely used in refined European interiors during the second half of the 19th century.
Description
Each lamp stands on a shaped square base veneered with richly figured malachite in deep green tones. The base is bordered by a gilt bronze beaded frieze and finely moulded mounts. The tripartite support consists of three slender, slightly curved legs ending in claw feet and rising towards a circular reservoir. The upper section is decorated with finely modelled ram heads, a classical motif associated with neoclassical and Empire-style design.
The reservoir is also covered with polished malachite and framed by gilt bronze mounts with beaded borders, friezes and stylised foliage. The lower part of the reservoir is enriched with a radiating leaf motif, giving the lamps a strong architectural and antique-inspired character. The overall silhouette is elegant and balanced, combining verticality, symmetry and rich decorative detail.
The lamps retain their green glass shades, formed with a lobed outline and decorated with gilt vegetal motifs. The deep translucent green of the glass harmonises with the natural tones of the malachite, creating a coherent and highly decorative ensemble. The visible burners and glass chimneys reinforce their original function as oil lamps and add to their historical character.
Technique and materials
Gilt and chased bronze, polished malachite and green tinted glass with gilt decoration. The quality of execution lies in the contrast between the finely chased metallic mounts, the polished mineral surface and the coloured transparency of the glass. The gilt bronze elements are carefully assembled and applied, following the standards of luxury decorative objects produced in the late 19th century.
Dating
Late 19th century, circa 1880-1900. The dating is supported by the historicist neoclassical form, the use of gilt bronze mounts, the ram-head decoration, the tripod structure and the decorative use of malachite, all typical of prestigious interior objects from this period.
Condition
Good overall condition, with signs of age and light wear consistent with use and period. The gilding retains a strong decorative appearance. The malachite elements and green glass shades are visually well preserved. The burners are present; functionality has not been tested and should be checked by a specialist before use.
Function and display
This pair may be displayed as collectible decorative oil lamps or used as statement pieces in a classical, eclectic or historicist interior. Their scale, materials and strong visual presence make them suitable for a console, mantelpiece, sideboard, library or formal reception room.
