"a La Ville De Sèvres" Porcelain Sugar Bowl And Dish Set, Napoleon III Period, Circa 1870
An elegant serving set consisting of a bowl and its matching sugar dish, made of Paris hard porcelain.
Both pieces feature a superb Japanese-inspired design, a style emblematic of the Second Empire and the fascination with the Far East following the World’s Fairs.
The sculpted detailing on the side handles and the lid knob realistically depicts knotted bamboo branches, adorned with small leaves in relief and accented with gold fillets.
The body of the pieces is accentuated by a wide circular band in celadon green (water green), framed by bands of glossy gold.
Each piece bears on its base the red wet stamp of the prestigious Parisian firm:
“Boulevard des Italiens, 23 and Rue de Choiseul, 20 — À la VILLE DE SÈVRES — MACÉ”.
Under the direction of Louis Aimé Césaire Macé (1810–1888), this decorative workshop and luxury store on the Grands Boulevards was renowned for the technical perfection of its gilding and enamels, competing directly with the Imperial Sèvres Manufactory for an aristocratic clientele.
In perfect condition, no chips, cracks, hairline cracks, or restoration.
The porcelain has retained all of its original whiteness and translucency.
Gilding in excellent condition with some more noticeable signs of wear on the bowl.
