Ceramic Dish From The Maîtrise De Nimy By Georges Destrebecq, Circa 1945

Artist: Georges Destrebecq - Maîtrise De Nimy (1943-1950).
A large circular folk art earthenware dish from the famous Maîtrise de Nimy (Belgium), created in the mid-1940s by the ceramicist Georges Destrebecq (1925–1984).

This piece, bearing form number 32, is distinguished by its exceptional dimensions of 33.2 cm, significantly larger than the workshop’s standard productions (generally limited to 28–29 cm).

It features a rich, radiating, spiral design in high relief, reminiscent of peacock eye patterns, enhanced by polychrome glazed motifs (blue, green, wine-red, white) and superb metallic gilding.

The rim is accentuated by an elegant twisted border in relief, characteristic of the artist’s craftsmanship. The reverse side offers a magnificent aesthetic contrast thanks to a marbled glaze with very intense green-blue hues.

Georges Destrebecq is a leading figure in postwar artistic ceramics in Belgium.
A graduate of the Mons Academy of Fine Arts, he joined the Maîtrise de Nimy (1943–1950) in 1943.
Founded at the initiative of Raoul Godfroid in the midst of World War II, this collective of pioneering artists stood against industrial standardization to restore the prestige of earthenware through unique works of art.
Within the group, Destrebecq quickly established himself as a pioneering innovator.
His daring experiments with thick textures, relief cloisonné, and the incorporation of precious metals (such as the gold highlights seen here) directly foreshadowed the great revival of ceramics in the 1950s.

This work bears witness to this period of artistic effervescence and creative freedom.

Diameter 33.2 cm, height 5.5 cm, 2050 g.

Excellent condition. No cracks, no chips, no restoration. The vibrancy of the glazes, the pure white, and the gilded reliefs is absolutely remarkable for a piece from this era. A true showpiece for the discerning collector.
