Secretary Desk, Stamped "d.l. Ancellet" Louis XVI Period, 18th Century
Artist: Denis-louis Ancellet
Solid mahogany secretary desk stamped *D.L.ANCELLET, Louis XVI period, 18th century.
Front opens with two hinged doors, a flap, and a drawer, all made of solid mahogany. The flap, trimmed with havana-colored leather embossed with a fine iron pattern, reveals a compartment containing six small drawers. The front posts are beveled to resemble pilasters, delicately carved with a frieze of wolf’s teeth and topped with a finely chiseled gilded bronze capital. This secretary desk is in good condition, with its original varnish cleaned by our workshop; it has a beautiful mahogany patina (with a few small cracks). Original locks operated by two keys. Original red Flemish marble top in very good condition. Stamped “D.L.ANCELLETC” and “JME
” on the front right crossbar and the rear left side panel.
* Denis-Louis ANCELLET 1735–1823. Until 1780, his workshop was located on Rue de Charenton; he then moved to Rue Saint-Nicolas and served as a Councilor for the Paris Carpenters’ and Cabinetmakers’ Guild. His mark was sometimes associated with the prestigious mark of Adam WEISWEILLER, which would suggest that the two cabinetmakers may have worked together.
