Silk Damask Strip With Vases, Pomegranates And Carnations, Italy, 17th Century
Silk Damask Strip with Vases, Pomegranates and Carnations, Italy, 17th Century
Crimson red silk damask.
Dimensions: 164 × 62 cm (64.57 × 24.41 inches).
Strip composed of four rectangular sections of fabric sewn together. The fully Baroque decoration features gadrooned vases holding arrangements of large leaves, stylised pomegranates and carnations, surrounded by scrolling stems and volutes. The contrast between the lustrous and matte surfaces of the weave defines the pattern.
Italian manufacture, probably Florentine. Retains antique openwork passementerie with a short fringe matching the damask, together with an antique lining.
Shows signs of age. The richness of the Baroque motifs and the flowing movement of the floral arrangements give the piece a striking decorative presence.
