Rare Particleboard Stool By Max Bill, Ulm, Circa 1962
Developed as a result of research conducted at the Ulm School of Design beginning in 1954, this stool was designed by Max Bill, Hans Gugelot, and Paul Hildinger as a versatile piece of furniture adaptable to the school’s various needs. The version shown here, featuring a drawer, represents an evolution of the model developed in the early 1960s during a workshop.
Its construction relies on the use of simple, standardized materials: particleboard for the side panels and top, and turned wood for the crossbar. A drawer integrated beneath the top adds storage functionality without compromising the simplicity of the structure.
Serving as a seat, a small table, and a storage unit all at once, this object directly embodies the philosophy of the Ulm School: a functional, economical, and reproducible design, stripped of all superfluous elements, in which form derives from function and the manufacturing process.
Edition: produced by HfG Ulm, circa 1962.
