Planters With Fish And Mermaids By Jacques Blin, Circa 1960
Artist: Jacques Blin
Glazed ceramic planter by Jacques Blin, circa 1960, featuring a continuous band of stylized fish and mermaids. A leading figure in postwar French ceramics, Jacques Blin (1920–1995) founded his studio in the early 1950s and developed a highly personal style, combining clean lines, muted glazes, and incised decorations featuring animals and stylized figures. The cylindrical form is covered with an ochre glaze tinged with brown and black, decorated with fish and mermaids incised directly into the clay. Hatching, dots, and engraved lines bring their silhouettes to life and form a graphic frieze around the entire circumference of the piece. The ivory-glazed interior provides a luminous contrast to the ochre glaze on the exterior. The incised work and variations in the enamel give each piece its unique character and are among the most recognizable elements of Jacques Blin’s work in the 1950s and 1960s.
