Pair Of Turquoise-blue Glazed Earthenware Dolphins - 19th Century
A beautiful pair of turquoise-glazed earthenware dolphins from the 19th century, forming a particularly decorative set.
These marine creatures echo the fantastical depiction of the dolphin so beloved in 18th-century decorative arts: wide, open mouths revealing their teeth, bulging eyes, bodies covered in scales, outstretched fins, and curved tails.
The expressive modeling is accentuated by a glossy glaze in rich shades of blue. Deeper in the recesses and lighter on the raised areas, it highlights every detail of the sculpture. This beautiful turquoise color is reminiscent of Théodore Deck’s famous blue, though it does not constitute an attribution to his workshop.
