Bellep Faience plate with Orientalizing enamel decoration of a dragon Stamp on the back of the faience factory La Roquette in Paris, unsigned probably by Théodore Deck (1823-1891) Theodore Deck was born in Guebwiller in the Haut-Rhin department. In 1841, he entered as an apprentice with the master stove maker Hügelin père, in Strasbourg. In two years, he learned the methods inherited from the 16th century, such as the inlay of colored pastes in the manner of Saint-Porchaire. This apprenticeship did not prevent him from occupying his free time drawing or modeling clay in the workshop of the sculptor André Friederich. He arrived in Paris in December 1847.
