Sèvres Biscuit Porcelain Bearing The Signature Of The Sculptor Pompon.
Artist: Pompom, Sèvres
Porcelain biscuit sculpture from the Sèvres National Porcelain Manufactory, bearing a rectangular stamp (Sèvres); the intaglio stamp features the letter S surmounted by the year of manufacture (1927), framed by the letters DN (Domaine National).
Next to the stamp are the engraved initials “TL” (or “FL”).
A stylized animal sculpture in white bisque depicting Pompon’s dove, perched on a monolithic Art Deco-style pedestal.
François Pompon (1855–1933) was a French sculptor famous for his animal sculptures with simplified and refined forms. Long overshadowed as a collaborator for other great masters—notably Auguste Rodin and René de Saint-Marceaux—he did not achieve resounding success until the age of 67 at the 1922 Salon d’Automne. His masterpiece, *The Polar Bear* (1922), housed at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, is his most iconic work.
His works can be found at the Musée d’Orsay (Paris), the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, and the Musée François Pompon in Saulieu (his hometown in Burgundy).
