This bowl features an elegant, classic design typical of Chinese ceramics—in this case,an allegorical scene depicting prosperity and longevity, in which theTaoist deity Shoulao can be seen. He is recognizable by his advanced age, the shape ofhis skull, and his staff adorned with a gourd. Standing in the shade of atree, he is surrounded by children carrying peaches.
One can also read the poetic verse: 漫将蓬莱百花醪,倾注尘寰寿众生。
Which translates to “I slowly pour the wine of the hundredflowers of Penglai, to offer it to the living beings of this world ofdust.” (Mount Penglai is a sacred and mythical mountain-island inthe Bohai Sea in Chinese mythology, considered the realm of theEight Immortals).
In the background, within a double blue circle with a shaded outline, we findonce again the peach, the supreme symbol of immortality and longevity.
