The island of Fanning, now Tabuaeran, was annexed by BritainGreat Britain in 1888. The British communications company Cable andWireless built a relay station for its submarine telegraph cablecable on the island. The station was part of the "All RedLine " linking Australia, New Zealand and Canada toGreat Britain.
At the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914,the German East Asia Squadron, commanded by Vice-Admiral Maximilian von Spee, evenSpee, left its base in Tsingtao, China. His intention was to transportships to South America, where the British merchant marine could bebe easily attacked. Crossing the Pacific on September 6, Von Speedetached the light cruiser SMS Nürnberg (spelled Nurnburg on the base of theobject) to investigate the British installation at Fanning and destroy thethe telegraph station.
On the morning of September 7, 1914, the German cruiser approachesFanning under the French flag. Noticing the French flag, the crewhoist a British flag on the mast. Just as the staff noticed the deceptionthe deception, German soldiers have already landed on the island.
