Coffee cup with saucer
Family Rose enamelware
Glazed porcelain accented with gilding
China, Qianlong period (1735–1796), made for export to Europe
Dimensions : Cup diameter 6.2cm / Saucer diameter 13.4 cm
Condition report: wearon the decoration, a small chip on the handle
A fine example of export ceramics intended for theEuropean market. The narrative decoration depicts a court scene. In thebackground, one can make out a bell tower resembling that of a church, set apart from alarge building with European architecture that could correspond to the main body of the church. Since Chinese artisans had access toWestern engravings, they did not hesitate to draw inspiration from them in orderto satisfy European tastes, albeit sometimes with a touching clumsiness, havingever having seen this type of building themselves. Although contemporary with the cup andfeaturing a similar design, the saucer is likely a later addition.
