Important Berber Footed Jar, Aït Daoula, Greater Kabylie, Late 19th–early 20th Century
Pear-shaped terracotta vessel with two large, long handles, on a pedestal.
Tripod display base.
Rare in such good condition.
Decor painted in black and brick red on an earthy engobe, adorned with geometric motifs in bands along the shoulder, across the entire body, and on both sides.
On the body, panels of triangular motifs intersected by a square, rendered in reserve, on a beige background.
Two-handled jar, made of glazed terracotta, with geometric decoration painted in red on a yellow-beige engobe.
All these jars are carefully decorated with motifs whose symbolism has been studied:
the rhombus for men, the partridge for women, the egg for fertility…
The same decoration appears on both sides.
Amazigh ceramics are a powerful cultural phenomenon.
The motifs found include:
- fibula
- the Pleiades or Milky Way
- the moon and stars
- honeycomb patterns
- Snake head
- Stacked goblets
- Slow worm (?)
- Bird’s foot
- Terrestrial salamander
- Fishbone.
Very good collector’s condition.
