This is a magnificent gouache by Jean Guindon, an iconic painter from Marseille; here, he depicts a market scene in Old Marseille. His style is instantly recognizable, with its broad, flat areas of color and a highly subtle palette.
A landscape and seascape painter, he exhibited at the Salon de la Mer and, according to André Alauzen in his dictionary of painters from Provence and the Côte d’Azur, one of the finest interpreters of Marseille’s Old Port and the landscapes of Cassis, where, in 1923, he welcomed into the house he was renting the Fauvist painters longing for the Côte d’Azur, as well as Leprin and Pascin.
During the interwar period, he was one of the leaders of the School of Proletarian Painters and specialized in gouaches on black paper, in which he expressed—by leaving the paper unpainted and simplifying forms to get straight to the essence— the plight of workers and ordinary people.
In 1971, La Vieille Charité in Marseille hosted a major exhibition of his works. The Cassis Museum holds his painting “Boats in the Port of Cassis”; in Marseille, his paintings can be found at the Museum of Fine Arts, the Cantini Museum, and the Regards de Provence Foundation.
