Louis XVI Console Table, Mahogany, 18th Century
Mahogany console table – Louis XVI period, circa 1780–1790.
An elegant rectangular console table made of mahogany and mahogany veneer, featuring remarkable neoclassical-inspired design.
The front features a wide, low-set drawer, adorned with a lock and a gilded bronze keyhole.
The front and sides are accented with gilt-bronze moldings and strips, while the corners are adorned with guilloché-decorated plaques.
The cabinet is topped with a veined white marble top, framed on three sides by a slender, openwork gilt-bronze railing that is particularly elegant.
It rests on four tapered, fluted column-like legs, adorned with gilded bronze rings and capitals, extending into tapered spindle-shaped feet, also embellished with gilded bronze.
A substantial, perfectly proportioned mahogany cross-leg shelf connects the four legs and gives the piece its function as a serving table.
The interior of the drawer features several compartments, reflecting the piece’s highly functional nature.
The piece stands out for the quality of its mahogany, the beautiful harmony of its proportions, and the richness of its gilded bronze trim—characteristics typical of late 18th-century Parisian furniture.
Similar consoles made of mahogany, marble, gilded bronze, and openwork railings are preserved at the Mobilier National.
