Dusautoy-stamped Coffee Table, 18th Century

Artist: Jean-pierre Dusautoy ( 1719-1800 )

Stamped parlor table (or chiffonnière table)

Dusautoy, Louis XV Period, Transition – 18th century

An elegant Louis XV-period chiffonnière table, stamped Dusautoy, crafted from rosewood and violetwood veneers, featuring remarkable geometric marquetry and particularly harmonious proportions.                                                                                         The rectangular top, with slightly rounded corners, is entirely inlaid with radiating motifs arranged in butterfly wings, forming an elegant four-quadrant design.
It is framed by a fine end-grain frieze (checkerboard pattern) followed by a band of carefully spun rosewood veneer, subtly highlighting the quality of the cabinetmaking.          The front features three stacked drawers, each covered with a matching cross-grain veneer and framed by the same checkerboard marquetry frieze as the top.
The drawers retain their chiseled and gilded bronze lock plates in the Rocaille style, as well as their original pull ring on the top drawer.                                          The sides are richly inlaid with large symmetrical panels featuring opposing leaf motifs, set within a frame of fillets and checkerboard patterns, reflecting the care taken with every surface of the piece.                           The piece rests on four elegantly curved legs, characteristic of Louis XV furniture, ending in refined, finely chiseled gilded bronze feet.
The legs are joined by a scalloped crossbar, also inlaid with a radiating four-leaf motif and framed by fillets, lending the piece both lightness and stability.                                                                     The particularly well-balanced proportions, the quality of the veneers, the delicacy of the marquetry fillets, and the understated richness of the bronze trim perfectly illustrate the craftsmanship of the finest Parisian workshops of the second half of the 18th century.

The Dusautoy mark, affixed in accordance with regulations in effect after 1743, links this table to the work of the Dusautoy family, a dynasty of Parisian cabinetmakers renowned for their high-quality small pieces of furniture, crafted in a refined style and intended for a wealthy clientele.                                                                                    This table could serve as a parlor table or a linen chest, a parlor table, a sewing table, or a small storage piece, thanks to its three drawers that provide functional storage space while maintaining remarkable elegance.
