Khemisset Rug, Berber Kilim, Embroidered Hanbel, 98 X 168 Cm, Wool, Middle Atlas, Morocco, 1900–1930
Artist: Femmes Berbères
These antique Berber rugs are quite rare, especially in this color palette.
Known as “Hambel,” this is an embroidered kilim from Khemisset, originating in the Middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco.
Woven and embroidered in wool, this rug measures 98 cm wide by 168 cm long, with fringes bringing the total length to 178 cm.
It is a remarkable piece of craftsmanship by the Berber women of this region.
Exclusively made by women on vertical double-warp looms.
These rugs are still largely dyed with vegetable dyes;
madder (taroubia) for red, black made from pomegranate leaves crushed with turnips, figs, and henna, indigo, and white wool obtained by bleaching the naturally ecru skeins.
These women use the Berber knot, and red is almost always the dominant color.
The designs are in black and white on a red background—traditional colors specific to this region—with splashes of orange, yellow, and green.
## Our piece is an exception to the rule!!! hence its rarity
Our rug is in excellent collectible condition and dates from the 1900s to the 1930s
The last photo shows the back of the rug, which resembles the back of Caucasian sumaks, as the wool pile has not been cut.
This rug has been professionally cleaned using eco-friendly methods.
Dimensions: Width: 98 cm (38") x Length: 168 cm (62")—plus fringes, 178 cm - 70"
