Three 16th-century Orphrey Embroideries – Figures Of Saints
A long orphrey panel worked in gold thread on a ground of crimson silk velvet, originally intended to adorn a religious dalmatic. Carefully preserved, it remains a genuine pleasure to behold.
The holy figures, including Christ, were embroidered separately in gold and silver threads, following the traditional technique associated with medieval orphreys, and were then applied by stitching onto the embroidered ground. Each figure stands beneath a gold canopy, above a delicate ground scattered with flowers.
A fine ensemble that was genuinely used for the liturgical purpose for which it was created, and naturally retains traces of that use. Wear and some old repairs can be seen on the vestments of the bishop in the centre. The lower part has also been cut, leaving the panel slightly shortened.
Condition: good condition, as found. The colours remain remarkably fresh and the gold threads retain a fine lustre. Comparable early embroideries are now frequently encountered in museum collections.
