Immortal, Bronze, Japan, Edo–meiji Period, 19th Century.
Bronze sculpture depicting a sage, a luohan, or an immortal (Liu Haichan?). The sculpture is notable for its dynamic expressiveness and meticulous attention to detail. The figure has distinctive, deeply set eyes, thick eyebrows, and a long, pointed beard and mustache. The sage is depicted with his torso turned and in a posture reminiscent of a dance or ritual movement. He is clad in a loose-fitting robe with wide sleeves that flutter in the wind. The fabric is adorned with engraved cloud motifs (a symbol of good fortune in Far Eastern art). The sculpture rests on an integrated rectangular base with slightly curved legs ending in stylized heads of Japanese shishi lions.
