Kraak Plate, Arita / Ko-imari, Japan, Edo Period, 18th Century.

A large porcelain dish painted with cobalt under glaze, in the style of 17th-century Chinese “Kraak” vases. The central composition depicts what are known as “scholarly objects” (accessories of the scholar): manuscript scrolls (makimono), decorative ribbons hanging from them, and a large, solitary banana or palm leaf, which serves as the dominant visual element. Beneath the scrolls, a geometric lattice pattern can be seen, along with stylized clouds and waves. The entire design is framed by a double polygonal ring decorated with a fish-scale pattern (seigaiha) and a fine braid. The rim of the plate is divided into eight large trapezoidal panels (quarters) separated by narrow bands. The large quarters are decorated with stylized plants and fruit motifs (peaches/pomegranates).

In good condition, with two small chips on the rim and a slight hairline crack near the rim.
