Saint Mary Magdalene (?), Oak, Renaissance, France, Circa 1570
This oak wood sculpture most likely depicts Saint Mary Magdalene. It shows a standing female figure, viewed from the front, with a graceful posture and her hip slightly turned. The head, with soft features, is turned slightly upward and to the right, concealed beneath a veil that falls over her shoulders. The figure is dressed in a fitted bodice, the bottom of which is adorned with a decorative cutout. Beneath the bodice, a finely pleated skirt is visible. Around her neck is a chunky necklace adorned with a medallion-shaped pendant. A draped piece of fabric, or a cloak, wraps dynamically around the hips and falls in thick, diagonal folds downward. Both arms are missing.
Carved oak.
Renaissance, France, circa 1570.
Height 59 cm, base 17.5 x 12 cm.
Condition visible in the photos: both arms are missing, along with signs of wear and other minor damage. Slight traces of polychromy remain.
