Quilted Chintz Quilt With A Glossy Finish - France Or Provence, Circa 1850

A lovely quilt made of glossy cotton chintz, dating from the late Louis-Philippe period or the early French Second Empire period. Chintz with a tobacco- or buff-colored background featuring a design of large scrolls embellished with generously blooming flowers.  Printed using a copper plate, the picot-edged design is highly precise with subtle polychromatic details. This glossy chintz, likely of English origin and later imported to France, is quilted using the running stitch in the 19th-century Provençal tradition. Double stitching in diamond patterns and hearts in the corners at all four angles suggest that this quilt was made for a joyous occasion! The cotton backing features a scattered pattern of purple pitch from the same period (with some soiling along the folds on the reverse). A very lightweight quilt with no apparent flaws. Overall good condition in terms of color and preservation.
