Large Basin From The Safavid Period, Khorasan, Iran, Late 17th–early 18th Century.

Artist: Art Safavide
Artist : Safavids -

Large basin from the Safavid period:
Late 17th, early 18th century.

An exceptional piece of Persian history featuring a rare patina on copper.
- The outer rim consists of six medallions decorated with trees of life, alternating with six depictions of princes and princesses seated or shown in bust form within flower-adorned niches.
- The niches and medallions are separated by a brick pattern.
Khorasan (a region in northeastern Iran)
- Two small friezes frame the composition.
- Another “medahill” divides the base of the decoration.
- The inner rim consists of an elegant frieze of bare, upward-pointing halberd-shaped spikes, followed by a frieze featuring an identical design but embellished with a flower at its center, finished with a spike.
- At the bottom of the basin, in the central section, a large sun unfolds, its rays shaped like “medahill,” a design that is therefore difficult to photograph.

The patina is of high quality; the basin has no chips or scratches,
and it is in very good condition.

From a former American collection.
Khorasan, Khurasan (in Persian: خراسان, meaning “land of the rising sun”)
It is a historical region located primarily in the northeastern part of present-day Iran.
The Safavids reigned from 1501 to 1722 (with brief restorations from 1729 to 1736 and from 1750 to 1773).
At their height, they controlled all of what is now Iran, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Armenia, eastern Georgia, parts of the North Caucasus including Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan, as well as parts of Turkey, Syria, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan—in short, a vast empire.

## This dynasty, whose reign spanned more than two centuries, thus brought about a radical transformation of Persia, notably through the reorganization of the state, a new structure of legal authority, and the establishment of Shi’ism as the official religion.
Their reign is often considered the beginning of modern Iranian history, as well as one of the “Gunpowder Empires.”
Based on currently available evidence, it is certain that the Safavid family was of indigenous Iranian origin, and not of Turkish descent as is sometimes claimed.
It is likely that the family originated in Persian Kurdistan and later moved to Azerbaijan, where they adopted the Azerbaijani form of Turkish spoken there, eventually settling in the small town of Ardabil.
