Carved Wooden Panel Depicting A Cherub's Head, Renaissance (fontainebleau), Late 16th–early 17th Century

A square carved wooden panel depicting the head of a winged cherub in the center of an ornamental composition consisting of cut-out leather, scrolls, and shells, in keeping with the decorative innovations introduced by Primaticcio and Rosso Fiorentino at the Château de Fontainebleau in the mid-16th century. 

The “cut-out leather” motifs are particularly emblematic of these decorations, which are ubiquitous in the François I^er Gallery and the Duchess of Étampes’s chamber. Our small carved panel therefore echoes these ornamental styles that left a lasting mark on the French Renaissance. Although they quickly went out of style at the dawn of the 17th century, their presence justifies a dating that we estimate to be the second half of the 16th century, at the very latest the very beginning of the following century. 

It is likely a fragment of a piece of furniture (chest, cabinet), possibly from a sacristy.
In good overall condition; note, as documented in the photographs, a few chips along the edges and old signs of wood-boring insects.
The central motif, aside from some natural wear and tear expected for a 400-year-old object, remains in very good condition and is still fully legible.

Very beautiful patina; the carving is remarkable for its depth and expressiveness.
