Saint John the Baptist – Polychrome oak sculpture, 16th–17th century
An imposing sculpture carved from solid oak depicting Saint John the Baptist as a desert hermit. The saint is depicted standing, his left arm raised toward the sky (“Ecce Agnus Dei”), holding a scallop shell in his right hand. He wears a garment made of animal hide held together by cords, in accordance with the iconography of the Precursor.
Traces of gilded polychrome on the drapery. Wrought-iron mounting ring on the back (for placement in a niche or church altarpiece).
Folk religious art from southern France. Formerly part of a collection in Auvergne
