Object description :

"Plutarch – Parallel Lives – Lyon 1566 – Antoine Gryphius – Humanist Edition"
Plutarch – Parallel Lives – Lyon, 1566 – Antoine Gryphius Volume II only – Lyon humanist edition – Translation by Hermann Cruserius Editor / Printer: Antoine Gryphius (Antonius Gryphius) Place: Lyon (Lugduni) Date: 1566 Format: Large in-18 (8 x 13 cm, thickness 4.5 cm) Language: Latin Full title: Plutarchi Chaeronensis Vitae comparatae illustrium virorum Graecorum et Romanorum, interprete Hermanno Cruserio. Volume: Volume II only Latin translation by Hermann Cruserius (Hermann Cruser) of Plutarch’s Parallel Lives, including several pairs of Greco-Roman lives compared (extracts according to the editions). Tight text in two columns, clear and regular typography, typographic mark of Gryphius’s griffin on the title. Volume II alone (complete with this volume) Full contemporary base. Fillet framing the covers with a gilt medallion in the center. Ribbed spine decorated with gilt florets. Damaged headcaps. Some foxing and soiling from use. Solid paper, clear printing. All in fair condition for a 16th-century working copy. Rare work, a testament to the humanist printing works in Lyon during the Renaissance. Antoine Gryphius, a Lyon printer-bookseller, son of the famous Sébastien Gryphe, perpetuates the humanist tradition of the Gryphe house: sober typography, elegant characters, careful printing. Plutarch's Parallel Lives, translated from Greek into Latin by Hermann Cruserius, had several Lyon printings between 1548 and 1567. Some contemporary editions bear the address of Charles Pesnot, who is said to have printed a parallel version the same year from the same matrices. ????
